Research & Impact

Applied Research. Peer-Reviewed Science. Decision-Relevant Evidence.

MedMetrics research is designed not simply to generate analysis, but to produce evidence capable of advancing scientific understanding and informing healthcare decisions.

Selected Case Studies:

Economic Burden of Vision Loss — Malta

MedMetrics collaborated with the Malta Eye Study to add a health-economic dimension to existing population-based epidemiological data, estimating costs, productivity losses, disability and quality-of-life consequences associated with vision loss.

Impact: Demonstrates how existing clinical and epidemiological datasets can generate additional economic and policy-relevant evidence without requiring an entirely new clinical study.

Economics of Retinopathy of Prematurity

MedMetrics systematically evaluated economic evidence for ROP screening and treatment in Canada, the United Kingdom and United States.

Impact: Consolidated the evidence demonstrating generally favourable cost-effectiveness while identifying important evidence gaps relevant to policymakers and neonatal eye-care services.

Glaucoma Control — sub-Saharan Africa

Health-economic modelling was developed within a funded programme examining alternative glaucoma-control strategies, followed by real-world research on costs, affordability, treatment and quality of life in Tanzania.

Impact: Generated evidence relevant to designing affordable and sustainable approaches to glaucoma control in resource-constrained settings.

Economic Burden of Bacterial Conjunctivitis — United States

Epidemiological evidence and economic modelling were combined to estimate the direct and indirect costs associated with bacterial conjunctivitis.

Impact: Quantified the population-level economic importance of a common ophthalmic condition and generated peer-reviewed evidence relevant to treatment and healthcare-resource decisions.

Contact-Lens-Associated Corneal Infiltrative Events

MedMetrics combined epidemiological evidence with healthcare-resource and cost data to quantify the economic consequences of contact-lens-associated corneal infiltrative events.

Impact: Estimated an annual US economic burden of approximately $58 million, demonstrating the potential value of interventions that reduce these complications.
